These state-of-the-art hydrophones are positioned at depths exceeding 400 meters. Their primary mission is to monitor the acoustic landscape of the Red Sea's twilight zone, a region that remains largely unexplored. Unlike traditional visual surveys, acoustic monitoring allows us to "see" in the dark, capturing the presence of elusive cetacean species like the Cuvier's beaked whale.

The Technical Challenge

Deploying sensitive equipment in the high-salinity, high-temperature environment of the Red Sea presents unique engineering challenges. The sensors are housed in pressure-resistant titanium spheres, coated with a bio-fouling resistant compound developed specifically for this mission.

The array will remain on the seafloor for six months, continuously recording soundscapes. This data will not only help us map marine mammal distribution but also assess the impact of anthropogenic noise from increasing shipping traffic in the region.

Recovery is scheduled for April 2026. Once retrieved, the terabytes of data will be processed using our proprietary AI algorithms to isolate biological signals from background noise. Preliminary results will be shared in our mid-year impact report.
